Triple Charity Fundraiser, Casual day 2nd December
Transition year Enviornmental science class and council are hosting a fundraiser on the 2nd of December in aid of Pieta House, Dogs for the Disabled and Aid Bandon Children . Chocolate bars and sweets will be on sale in reused packets along with more of Ms Redmond's famous recycled hedgehogs and shoebox houses for 8 euro. The shoe boxes were collected from local shops in accordance with our ideology of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. The 2nd of December is a casual day and students will have the opportunity to paint their handprint along the hallway to the art block in the Dean Building.
Environment class
Ms Redmond has established an environment class, as part of the rotation subjects for TY students. Here TY students will actively plan and help to keep the local environment clean. The first major problem they're tackling is litter. Surveys have been taken from each year about litter and recycling. We have started reading electricity meters weekly in the school.

Litter and Waste.... Some facts!
An Taisce an Irish organisation that conserves Irish heritage both building and natural (the environment).
Cigarette butts are the most littered items in the world, with 4.5 trillion discarded every year. Estimates on the time they take to decay ranges from 5 to 400 years.
Litter includes tyres, electrical appliances and industrial containers all of which are often dumped in woodlands.
Tyres are the most often dumped hazardous waste. In the USA approximately 262 million tyres are scraped each year. Tyres become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and a nesting ground for rats.
Open containers like paper cups and drink cans (if they hold rainwater) also provide a breeding ground for mosquitos.
Cleaning up litter in the USA costs about 11 billion dollars a year which is 10 times more than the cost of rubbish disposal.
